I first called R1 Moving and Storage about a year ago to move from California to Florida. I received a quote of about $900.00 to move my 1 bedroom apartment.
I contacted the company when they did not show up and they informed me that they were doing another move, I advised him that he was a no show the other day and I had to change my schedule and I needed this to be done today. Within 1 hour they showed up to the storage facility.
When they arrived, they immediately advised that I would need to pay the deposit before they started moving my items. I paid $500.00 for the deposit and 300.00 was due when they completed the move to FL in two weeks. They said that the extra weight contributed to my tool box and tools and that the new charge will be $1,764.00. When I was advised my items were supposedly already in transit and I would need to pay 1,264.00 opposed to the 300.00 when the items are delivered. I considered this blackmail but they had my stuff.
My items arrived my tool box, tools and another box of dishes were left in Los Angeles by accident and that it would be delivered the following week. The delivery driver demanded the full $,2464.00 prior to unloading the truck.
After the week passed, no call. When I got in touch with them I began calling everyday to find out the status of my missing items to no avail.
I then started to deal with the corporate office. After over a month they finally said they had located my items in the LA warehouse and was in the process of having them shipped to their San Jose office then they will ship it to me. My items finally arrived and found that my tool box was taken out of the original packaging and that the drawers were pried open and several drawers were broken and all of my tools were stolen. I also found items in the tool box that were not mine. Secondly my box of dishes were all broken it appears that the box was deliberately dropped and kicked around.
I am currently planning to settle this legally as well. I am hoping that these moving company reviews will help warn others to be carefull who you choose when giving your posessions to some company.

May I talk to you over the phone about this? I am now concerned about my move. Please post me at vcaras@concentric.net with your phone # if I can call you. Thank you. Victoria
Help! What should I do?
I just had an outrageous experience with R1 Moving and Storage, San Jose. They ripped me off for $6,000.00 by asking me to sign innocent-looking forms and later filling in inflated prices. When I wasn't looking they took back my copies of these forms so I couldn't prove later that I didn't approve the charges.
Now I have to pay ransom to get my property back--either a further check for $2100 or my signature on a waiver of my right to litigate. Help! What should I do?
Hi! My name is Project 71. Weird name I know, but my masters are weird too. My masters also say that I'm a really interesting website. So why don't you consider reading what I am. Masters say it won't take you more than 22s to read. :) http://www.project71.com/readme Enjoyy!
I wish I had read all the bad reviews before hiring this lousy company....
I am still awaiting my goods from Hawaii and R1 told the Better Business Bureau that they already delivered them.
Any way we can support each other? gnkaas@hotmail.com
To summarize my experience with R1 (see my previous post): the original estimate was $5,000. My estimate for a fair price after all the packing was done was maybe $7000-$7500 (hey, I'm experienced at this). The final bill was $13,000. After raising a storm--and being massively insulted and lied to by the whole company from the packers to the president of the company--I was finally able to get them to drop the final payment of $2,000 by signing a waiver. Only then would they give me my furniture. In the end it cost me $11,000 (for a $7,000 job).
Having said this, I will admit that most of the packing was pretty good except that many of the (very expensive) boxes were only half full and many other items were way overpadded. The truck arrived a day late, but the unpackers were friendly and conscientious.
So far, with less than half of the items unpacked, nothing seems to be missing and only a few less-important items are slightly damaged.
If any of you are planning action against this company, I would be glad to support you. However, I signed away my right to litigate directly.
I wanted to move with a moving company and decided not to, after i heard about the moving scams going on from Packing Service Inc. they provided me the information that i needed not to choose to move with a moving company, Packing Service Inc. www.MovingScam.Info came and packed all my stuff and loaded everything to a "door to door" container, my move was great and nothing broke, my advice to you all, use a company to pack and load and move with a container company.
Have a good luck with your move and be safe and careful of moving scams.
My mom had a horrendous experience with R1 on a move last year from New Mexico to Oregon. Everything she owned was ruined -- physically broken. They jerked her around, jacked up the price and were some of the rudest, most incompetent people we've ever experienced. They also lost several boxes of personal momentos from my childhood. Has anyone received them? My name is Tia, and it would mean the world to us to get them back. Please email me if you know anything. By the way, I have several boxes that were delivered to us, that do not belong to us. Mostly linens.
Moving can be expensive so I'm not sure why people choose to even attempt to scam someone. But the biggest problem out of it all is that it happens routinely, I've never experienced a moving scam but I've found a great company by the name of Packing Service Inc or the site www.PackingServiceinc.com they send a professional rep out to your home and you get an exact quote of what it would will cost to move your things. Also through them I found out alot about moving scams by visiting the site www.movingscam.info very very helpful. I recommend this company anytime.
